If necessary, when running this test in a virtual machine, set Display to No Xv in Tools, Preferences Display tab

This tests that Parole can open many different files.

Launch Parole
Parole opens
Download an audio file https://samples.mplayerhq.hu/flac/When%20I%20Grow%20Up.flac
Open then play this file with Parole
File plays
If a required codec is missing, an installation prompt appears and installs the missing codec. Afterwards, media playback begins
Press Ctrl+L to play file from a location
Copy https://download.blender.org/durian/trailer/sintel_trailer-480p.ogv into dialogue, press Open
File plays

This part of the test case is optional

If you have a media file with subtitles, play this file
Subtitles work and show up correctly
Insert then play some CDs and DVDs
CDs and DVDs play (note: to play encrypted DVDs, you will need to have libdvdcss2 installed)
Chapters and tracks for CDs/DVDs are shown in the playlist

I have uninstalled this program for two reasons
1. It wouldn't even play .ogg files - I didn't try it with anything else (due to bug above)
2. There is a lot of software that would improve Linux greatly, yet another media player does not fit into that list.

"Gstreamer backend error, could not initialise supporting library" (eg. md_ogg.ogm)

Before I tested Parole, I had some troubles updating ubuntu Trusty. details given in the bug report.
