This test will check that Xfce4 Dictionary can open and use a Dictionary Server

Locate "Dictionary" under "Office" on the menu and click on it
The Dictionary dialog opens
Confirm that the "Search with:" option is set to 'Dictionary Server', type a word in the Search term field and press Enter
Definitions for that word appear in the window
You will probably see returns from more than one dictionary. The number of definitions found will be shown on the status bar at the bottom of the window

This test will check that the Spell Checker works

Select the 'Spell Checker' option on the "Search with:" line
The 'Find' icon to the right of the search term field changes from a magnifying glass to "ABC"
Type a word in the search term field and press Enter
The window displays "Spell Checker Results:" for that word
The suggestions indicate the correct language locale for this installation (e.g., "en_US")

This test will check the Speed Reader option

Click the 'Speed Reader' icon
The Speed Reader dialog opens
Click the 'Start' button
The Speed Reader-Running window opens and the sample text is played at the default speed
Close the Speed Reader-Running window
Click the 'Speed Reader' icon again
Change the "Words per Minute:" to 100
Change the "Word Grouping:" to 5
Change the "Font Size:" to 26 and press OK
Check the "Mark Paragraphs" option
Click the 'Start' button
The sample text plays at the new speed, five words at a time, with a 26 pt font, and with a paragraph break after the first sentence
Close the Speed Reader-Running window
Click the 'Speed Reader' icon again
Locate the three icons to the right of the text box and click the one with the X
The sample text is cleared
Click the icon that looks like a folder
The Choose a file to load dialog opens
Find a plain text file, select it and click the 'Open' button
The contents of that file appear in the Speed Reader text box
Click the 'Start' button
The text from the pasted file plays at the correct settings
Click the 'Stop' button
The play stops and returns you to the Speed Reader dialog
Open another application and copy some text from it into the clipboard
Back in the Speed Reader dialog, click the icon that looks like a clipboard
The text from the system clipboard appears in the text box
Click the 'Start' button to play that text
The pasted text from the clipboard plays at the correct settings
Close the Speed Reader-Running dialog
Close the Speed Reader dialog

These tests will check the customization of Preferences

From the main Dictionary dialog, click "File" on the menu
The File menu drop-down opens
Click "Preferences"
The Dictionary preferences dialog opens
Under the 'General' tab, check "Spell Checker" under the "Default search method:"
Click the 'Close' button
Verify that the "Search with:" option is still set to the default of 'Dictionary Server'
Click the 'Quit' button
Re-launch the Dictionary application
The default "Search with:" option now shows 'Spell Checker'
Click File->Preferences
Select the 'Dictionary Server' tab
From the "Dictionary:" drop-down, select "!(use all, stop after first match)"
Click the 'Close' button
Make sure 'Dictionary Server' is the selected "Search with:" mode and then enter a search term
The returned definitions only come from a single dictionary
Click File->Preferences again
Select the 'Web Service' tab
Several choices for a Web search URL are shown
Click the 'Dictionary.com' button and click 'Close'
The "Web Service" option on the "Search with:" bar is no longer grayed out
Check the "Web Service" option
The 'Find' icon to the right of the search term field now shows a globe
Enter the same search term you used in the previous step
The default web browser opens to Dictionary.com showing the definition of the word you entered in the search field

This test will check the functionality of the Xfce4-Dict plugin

Make sure that the Dictionary application is closed
Right-click on an empty area of the panel
Click Panel->Add New Items
Select "Dictionary" and click the 'Add' button
The Dictionary icon appears on the panel
Close the Add New Items dialog
Left-click on the Dictionary panel icon
The Dictionary application opens
Close it
Right-click on the Dictionary panel icon
A drop-down menu appears
Click "Properties"
The Dictionary Preferences dialog opens
Close it
Open a web page in your browser and select a word on that page
Drag that selected word and drop it on the Dictionary panel icon
The Dictionary application opens and returns that word from whichever "Search with:" mode you had selected as the default (i.e., Dictionary Server, Web Server or Spell Checker)
Close Dictionary
