Clean kernel upgrade:
Bingo the new kernel is where the panel volume slider bug appears.
Normal updated precise kernel volume slider is fine.
Upgrade to quantal kernel volume slider does not work.

Install went exactly as described in the QQ forum for testing the quantal kernel in precise. Ordinary ubuntu & intenet worked fine.
I then did an update on the precise and the kernel did not update to 3.4.0-5. The update to 3.4.0-5 has been occurring on quantal.
I surmise future kernel updates from QQ or RR or SS ... to the precise LTS would be handled separately from the regular kernel updates.
